Nonlinear dynamics

What does a child on a swing have in common with quantum limited electrical amplifiers, mechanical memory units and the LIGO experiment? They all make use of ‘parametric oscillation’, a powerful and very general physics concept that can be found in any resonating system, be it optical, electrical or mechanical. Because it is closely linked to nonlinearity and chaos, parametric oscillation can produce very complex behavior. Many fascinating phenomena therefore remain to be understood.

Master thesis opportunities

We offer you the chance to carry out your master thesis in the field of nonlinear parametric oscillations. We are a team of both theoretical and experimental physicists at ETH Zurich. Our project is unconventional, ambitious and highly collaborative. In the past year, we have published one patent and two papers, with a third paper in planning. Our patent has been awarded to be in the top 20 invetions of ETH in 2016 at the spark award, see also ETH news article.

We are looking for independent and motivated students with a fascination for unexplored physics territory. Depending on your preference, you can contribute either to the theoretical or experimental side of this project. Students who are looking for an exceptional challenge have the opportunity to combine both aspects within a single master thesis. You can apply by contacting or .
